A Visit Tour by High School Students

“I’m very excited to be here visiting the production plants, it makes up for what we can’t learn from the class.” said a student who is in grade two of Quanzhou Experimental High School. Over 150 students from the school came to FREP on August 23rd  for a summer camping program titled “A Tour in FREP”, which is aimed to offer them a chance to take a closer look at petrochemical companies like FREP.

Form many of them it was the first time to get into a company with tight security. As the mystery of the company was unveiled, they got to know more about knowledge of related sectors such as petrochemical industry, fire prevention and safety, environmental protection and etc.

Through watching company propaganda film and videos introducing petrochemical knowledge, the students had a better understanding of how products like ethylene and aromatics are used in production and daily life.

“Is it plastic particle! Is it from oil?” asked a student. “It is the raw material for plastic products we see at home, like tap water pipe, food wrap, refuse bag, lunch box, bumper and cell phone case, etc. Look at the PP particle, it’s what the diaper is made of. Are you surprised?” said the commentator.

“PX is an important component of gasoline, but people have a misunderstanding about the toxicity of PX. The toxicity of PX is no more than that of caffeine. We drive every day, it’s safe. There is no need to worry.” explained Chen Shaofeng, the supervisor of HR&A Dept., noticing that the students were quite interested in PX.

The students further listened to an introduction on refining at the new CCR. A student said, “We can hardly learn something about GB V gas oil from the class. Now, our knowledge about environmental protection has grown thanks to the site visiting and your introduction.”

Then the students moved to the CCR of HCU, where surprisingly found that it only takes two or three months to get familiar with the whole set of CCR work. Yuan Xiaomin, the HSE engineer, explained to them, “CCR enables the process operators to monitor units parameters from the console. And our field operators do walk-around safety inspection at set intervals to make sure units are running safely.”

Apart from learning petrochemical knowledge, the students also learned how to use a fire extinguisher and how to do CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) under the instruction of the fire-fighting team of HSE dept. Two students extinguished the open fire from a bucket with fire extinguishers. And one student excised CPR on a dummy.

Through the visit, the students have developed a strong interest in the sustainable development and responsible care of the company. They have become more aware that our life cannot be separated from petrochemical enterprises.

In order to let people learn more about what FREP had done and achieved in green development and environmental protection, FREP had invited hundreds of people from all walks of life to visit, including deputies to the NPC, CPPCC members, teachers, students and residents, etc., since the “Open Day” was initiated in 2012.
